Advocating for change- Panel discussion at ISSICON 2023

Ishmeet Singh (PT)

Shared my thoughts on how we can improve Accessibility to Spinal Cord Injury(SCI) Care in India along with global SCI experts, at the International Spine & Spinal Injuries Conference 2023! 🇮🇳

The panel discussion moderated by Dr. G Balamurali highlighted critical challenges:

-Limited access to specialized care: Many PwSCI in India face geographical barriers to reach dedicated SCI centres, impacting their recovery.
-Lack of awareness and resources: Stigma and misinformation regarding SCI.
-Inadequate infrastructure and rehabilitation: Specialized facilities and trained professionals are crucial for maximizing functional independence, yet remain scarce.

And we proposed the following solutions:
-Investing in public health awareness: Educating the masses and sensitizing medical personnel at the grass root level about SCI can bridge the knowledge gap and improve the status quo.
-Promoting community-based rehabilitation: Empowering patients with accessible resources and support networks near their homes is essential for long-term well-being.
-Strengthening referral systems: Early identification and timely transfer to specialized units can make a world of difference.

This conversation was a powerful reminder that improving SCI care in India requires collective action from-
•Policymakers: Prioritizing SCI in healthcare initiatives and allocating resources for specialized centers and training programs.
•Medical professionals: Expanding knowledge and skills in SCI management, ensuring proper diagnosis, referral and intervention.
•Civil society: Raising awareness, advocating for policy changes, and supporting patients through community initiatives.

Together, we can build a more inclusive future where everyone living with SCI in India has access to the quality care they deserve.
